Croatia Airlines is the national airline and flag carrier of the Republic of Croatia. Based in Buzin, Zagreb, the airline is a member of Star Alliance and operates domestic and international services. Its main base is Zagreb Airport, with focus cities being Dubrovnik and Split. Croatia Airlines is the leading airline (in terms of passengers) from the former Yugoslavia.
On 7 August 1989, the first Croatian air carrier, called Zagal - actually Zagreb Airlines - was registered.Â Following the first democratic elections in Croatia, on 23 July 1990, Zagal changes its name to Croatia Airlines. In 1991 Croatia Airlines signed an agreement with Adria Airways which allowed it to lease a McDonnell Douglas MD-82 to commence domestic jet services. Following a short interruption of our flights caused by the aggression on Croatia, the airline was soon forced to suspend operations in 1992 but soon then entered the international air traffic and become a member of the International Association of Air Transport (IATA).
1993 saw the expansion of the airlines by buying new aircrafts and the opening of representative offices in several European cities and the company bought the travel agency Obzor to organize travel packages for groups and individuals. In 1996, Croatia Airlines became the first airline to fly to Sarajevo after the Bosnian War. 2 years later, Croatia Airlines became a member of the Association of European Airlines (AEA). On 18 November 2004, Croatia Airlines joined Star Alliance.
By March 2009, the airline completely retired its fleet of three ATR 42 short-haul aircraft, after operating the type since 1993, and replaced it with a fleet of six Bombardier Q400 aircraft.
Croatia airlines flies to a number of destinations in Europe, including: Netherlands, Greece, Spain, Serbia, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Turkey, UK, France, Kosovo, Italy, Austria and Switzerland. Domestic routes include: Dubrovnik, Pula, Rijeika, Split, Zadar and Zagreb.
